2063 — Abū ‘Alī al-Hasan ibn al-Hubāb al-Muqri’ narrated to us: Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Rahmān ibn Sahm narrated to us: al-Walīd ibn Muslim informed us, from al-Awzā‘ī, from al-Zuhrī, from Anas, that ‘Umar ibn al-Khattāb—may Allah be pleased with him—flogged Sabīgh al-Tamīmī for questioning certain expressions in the Quran, until blood welled in his back. He said this more than once, and sent word to the people of Basra that they were not to sit with him. Whenever he came to any gathering whatsoever, they would rise and leave him.
