2049 — Al-Firyābī also narrated to us, saying: Ibrāhīm ibn al-Mundhir al-Hizāmī narrated to us, saying: Man ibn Īsā narrated to us, saying: Mālik ibn Anas was leaving the mosque one day, leaning on my hand, when a man named Abū al-Juwayriyya, who was suspected of espousing irjā (the Murjiite doctrine), caught up with him. He said, “Abū Abd Allah, listen to something I wish to discuss with you. I will debate you and tell you my view.” Mālik asked him, “What if you defeat me in debate?” He replied, “If I defeat you, you will follow me.” Mālik asked, “And if another man then comes, debates us, and defeats us?” He replied, “We will follow him.” Mālik said, “O servant of Allah, Allah—Glorious and Exalted is He—sent Muhammad—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—with one religion, yet I see you moving from one religion to another. Umar ibn Abd al-Azīz said: ‘Whoever makes his religion a target for disputation will frequently shift from one position to another.’”
