197 — Ibrāhīm ibn Mūsā al-Jawzī informed us, saying: Yūsuf ibn Mūsā al-Qattān narrated to us, saying: Wakīʿ narrated to us, saying: Hammād ibn Salamah narrated to us, from ʿAmmār, the client of Banū Hāshim, who said: Ibn ʿAbbās recited, “Today I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favor upon you, and chosen Islam as your religion” [al-Mā’idah: 3]. A man from the People of the Book was with him and said, “Had we known the day on which this verse was revealed, we would have made it a festival.” Ibn ʿAbbās replied, “It was indeed revealed on the Day of ʿArafah, on a Friday.”
Muhammad ibn al-Husayn said: This makes it clear to anyone who understands that religion is not sound without affirmation in the heart, acknowledgment by the tongue, and deeds performed by the limbs, such as prayer, zakat, fasting, pilgrimage, jihad, and other similar deeds.
