Abū Muhammad Abd Allah ibn Sālih al-Bukhārī informed us: Uthmān ibn Abī Shaybah and Ahmad ibn Abd al-Jabbār narrated to us; they said: Abd Allah ibn Idrīs narrated to us, from his father, from Qays, from Tāriq ibn Shihāb, who said: A Jewish man said to Umar—may Allah be pleased with him—“Had we known the day on which this verse was revealed, we would have made it a festival: ‘Today I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favor upon you, and chosen Islam as your religion’ [al-Mā’idah: 3].” Umar—may Allah be pleased with him—replied, “I know the day on which it was revealed. It was revealed while we were standing at Arafah with the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace.”
