And Ibn Abī Dāwūd narrated to us, saying: Umar ibn Shabba narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Saīd al-Ahwal narrated to us, saying: Abthar ibn al-Qāsim Abū Zubayd narrated to us, saying: Husayn narrated to me, from Abū Abd al-Rahmān al-Sulamī—or another of Alī’s companions—from Alī—may Allah be pleased with him—who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “A people will come who bear a sobriquet: they will be called al-Rāfida (the Rejectors). If you encounter them, kill them, for they are polytheists.” I asked, “O Messenger of Allah, what will distinguish them?” He replied, “They will praise you for qualities you do not possess, and they will malign the early generations.”
