Abū Bakr Umar ibn Saʿīd al-Qarātīsī narrated to us, saying: Abū Bakr Ahmad ibn Mansūr al-Ramādī narrated to us, saying: Abū Sālih Abd Allāh ibn Sālih narrated to us, saying: Muʿāwiyah ibn Sālih narrated to me, from Alī ibn Abī Talhah, from Ibn Abbās, concerning the words of Allah Most High:
“He is the One who sent down tranquility into the hearts of the believers so that they might increase in faith along with their faith.” [al-Fath: 4]
He said: “Allah Most High sent His Prophet Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, with the testimony that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah. When the believers accepted it as true, Allah added prayer for them. When they accepted it as true, Allah added fasting for them. When they accepted it as true, He added zakat for them. When they accepted it as true, He added pilgrimage for them. When they accepted it as true, He added jihad for them. He then perfected their religion for them, and Most High said:
‘Today I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favor upon you, and chosen Islam as your religion.’ [al-Mā’idah: 3]
“Ibn Abbās said: ‘The polytheists and Muslims used to perform pilgrimage together. When Barā’ah was revealed, the polytheists were barred from the Sacred House, and the Muslims performed pilgrimage without any polytheist sharing the Sacred House with them. This formed part of the completion of the favor. Allah Most High revealed:
“Today those who disbelieve have despaired of your religion, so do not fear them, but fear Me. Today I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favor upon you, and chosen Islam as your religion.” [al-Mā’idah: 3]’”
