1968 — Ibn Nājiya also informed us, saying: Hārūn ibn Abd Allāh ibn Marwān narrated to us: al-Walīd ibn al-Agharr narrated to us: Amr ibn Yahyā ibn Saīd al-Umawī narrated to us, from ⦗2478⦘ his grandfather, who said: Abū Hurayra used to carry a waterskin for the ablution of the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him. Abū Hurayra fell ill, so Muāwiya carried it. While he was assisting the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—with his ablution, the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—raised his head and said, “O Muāwiya, if you are entrusted with any responsibility for the affairs of the Muslims, then fear Allah and act justly.” Because of what the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—had said, I never ceased thinking that I would be tested with this until I was appointed.

This is the last of the reports concerning the virtues of Muāwiya—may Allah be pleased with him—that have reached us. May Allah have mercy on Abū Sufyān and Hind.
