1967 — Ibn Nājiya also informed us: Abū Umayya Muhammad ibn Ibrāhīm, the official in charge of the distribution center at Tarsus, informed us: Muhammad ibn Mūsā al-Misrī narrated to us: Khālid ibn Yazīd ibn Subayh narrated to us, from his father, from Muāwiya ibn Abī Sufyān—may Allah be pleased with him—who said: “One day, I was assisting the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—with his ablution, pouring water over him from a vessel in my hand. He gave me an intense look, and I became frightened, causing the vessel to fall from my hand. He said, ‘O Muāwiya, if you are placed in charge of any of my nation’s affairs, then fear Allah and act justly.’” He continued, “Ever since that day, I have never ceased aspiring to such office and asking Allah to grant me the ability to act justly among you.”
