1966 — Abū Muhammad ibn Nājiya informed us: Abū Hammām al-Walīd ibn Shujā narrated to us: Muhammad ibn Sābiq narrated to us: Yahyā ibn Zakariyyā narrated to us, from Ismāīl ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Muhājir, from Abd al-Malik ibn Umayr, who said: Muāwiya—may Allah be pleased with him—said, “I have harbored hopes of attaining the caliphate ever since I heard the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—say: ‘O Muāwiya, if you come to rule, then rule well.’”
