Abū Muhammad Abd Allah ibn al-Abbās al-Tayālisī narrated to us. He said: Bundār Muhammad ibn Bashshār narrated to us. Abū Bakr Abd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn Abd al-Hamīd al-Wāsitī also narrated to us. He said: Abū Mūsā Muhammad ibn al-Muthannā narrated to us. He said:
We used to read before a blind shaykh in Basra. When the doctrine that the Quran was created was introduced in Baghdad, the shaykh said, “If the Quran is not created, then may Allah erase the Quran from my memory.”
When we heard him say this, we abandoned him and left. Some time later, we met him and asked, “So-and-so, what became of the Quran?”
He replied, “Nothing of it remains in my memory.”
We asked, “Not even, ‘Say: He is Allah, the One’ [al-Ikhlās: 1]?”
He replied, “Not even, ‘Say: He is Allah, the One’ [al-Ikhlās: 1], unless I hear someone else reciting it.”
