1956 – Abū Bakr ibn Shahrayār also narrated to us, saying: Fadl ibn Ziyād narrated to us, saying: Ribāh ibn al-Jarrāh al-Mawsilī narrated to us, saying: “I heard a man ask al-Muʿāfā ibn ʿImrān ⦗2467⦘, ‘Abū Masʿūd, how does ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz compare with Muʿāwiya ibn Abī Sufyān?’ I saw him become intensely angry, and he said: ‘No one is to be compared with the Companions of Muhammad—may Allah bless him and grant him peace. Muʿāwiya—may Allah be pleased with him—was his scribe, Companion, relative by marriage, and trusted custodian of the revelation of Allah, Mighty and Majestic. The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said: “For my sake, leave my Companions and relatives by marriage alone. Whoever reviles them shall incur the curse of Allah, the angels, and all people.”’”
