1944 – Abū Muhammad Yahyā ibn Muhammad ibn Sāʿid narrated to us, saying: al-Husayn ibn al-Hasan al-Marwazī narrated to us, saying: Marhūm ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz narrated to us.
1945 – Ibn Sāʿid said: Yaʿqūb ibn Ibrāhīm also narrated to us, saying: Marhūm ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz narrated to us—the wording is that of al-Husayn—saying: Abū Naʿāma al-Saʿdī narrated to us, from ⦗2461⦘ Abū ʿUthmān al-Nahdī, from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, who said:
Muʿāwiya—may Allah be pleased with him—came upon a circle of people in the mosque and asked, “What made you sit here?” They replied, “We have gathered to remember Allah, Mighty and Majestic.” He asked, “By Allah, is that the only reason you are sitting here?” They replied, “By Allah, that is the only reason we are sitting here.” He said, “I did not ask you to swear because I suspected you. Yet no one whose standing with the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—was comparable to mine related fewer hadith from him than I did. The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—once came upon a circle of his Companions and asked, ‘What made you sit here?’ They replied, ‘We have gathered to remember Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and to praise Him for guiding us to Islam.’ He asked, ‘By Allah, is that the only reason you are sitting here?’ They replied, ‘By Allah, that is the only reason we are sitting here.’ He said, ‘I did not ask you to swear because I suspected you. Rather, Gabriel—peace be upon him—came to me and informed me that Allah, Mighty and Majestic, boasts of you before the angels.’”
1946 – Ibn Nājiya also related it to us, saying: Bundār Muhammad ibn Bashshār narrated to us, saying: Marhūm ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz narrated to us, and he recounted the hadith through its chain of transmission.
