1935 — Ibn Abd al-Hamīd al-Wāsitī narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn ⦗2452⦘ Mahmūd narrated to us, saying: Ishāq ibn Hātim narrated to us, saying: Husayn al-Muallim narrated to me, saying: Asram al-Hamdānī narrated to us, from Abū Sinān, from al-Dahhāk, from al-Nazzāl ibn Sabra, from Ali ibn Abī Tālib—may Allah be pleased with him—who said: “Ibn Khatal used to serve as a scribe in the presence of the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—but he was killed on the day Mecca was conquered. The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—wished to employ Muāwiya as a scribe. Ali—may Allah be pleased with him—said, ‘There was no one among us more skilled at writing than he was.’ The Prophet feared that he might be like Ibn Khatal, so he consulted Gabriel—peace be upon him—about him. Gabriel said, ‘Employ him as your scribe, for he is trustworthy.’”
