The Book of the Virtues of Muawiya ibn Abī Sufyān—may Allah be pleased with him
Muhammad ibn al-Husayn—may Allah have mercy on him—said: Muawiya—may Allah have mercy on him—served as the Messenger of Allah’s scribe—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—recording Allah’s revelation—glorified and exalted is He—which is the Quran, at Allah’s command—glorified and exalted is He. He was a Companion of the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—and one for whom the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—supplicated that Allah protect him from punishment. He also supplicated that Allah teach him writing, grant him power throughout the lands, and make him a guide who was himself rightly guided.
The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—once seated him behind himself on his mount and asked, “Which part of you is closest to me?” He replied, “My belly.” The Prophet said, “O Allah, fill it with forbearance and knowledge.”
The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—also informed him, “You will indeed meet me in Paradise.”
The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—became related to him by marriage when he married Umm Habība, Muawiya’s sister—may Allah have mercy on them both. She thereby became a Mother of the Believers, and he became the maternal uncle of the believers. Allah—glorified and exalted is He—revealed concerning them:
“It may be that Allah will bring about affection between you and those of them with whom you were at enmity.” [al-Mumtahana: 7]
The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said, “I asked my Lord—glorified and exalted is He—that I neither marry into the family of anyone from my nation nor have anyone from my nation marry into my family, except that such a person be with me in Paradise.”
He is also among those concerning whom Allah—glorified and exalted is He—said:
“On the Day when Allah will not disgrace the Prophet and those who believed with him.” [al-Tahrīm: 8]
Thus, Allah the Generous has guaranteed that He will not disgrace him, for he was among those who believed in the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace. Reports will follow that demonstrate what I have stated. Allah alone grants success in this, if Allah Most High wills.
