It is related that Āisha (may Allah have mercy on her) was told, “A man has said, ‘You are not his mother.’” She replied, “He has spoken the truth. I am the Mother of the Believers, not the mother of the hypocrites.”
I was also informed that one of the early jurists was asked about two men who had sworn oaths on pain of divorce. One swore that Āisha was his mother, while the other swore that she was not his mother. He replied, “Neither of them has broken his oath.” He was asked, “How can that be? Surely one of them must have broken his oath.” He replied, “The man who swore that she was his mother is a believer, so he did not break his oath; and the man who swore that she was not his mother is a hypocrite, so he did not break his oath.”
Muhammad ibn al-Husayn (may Allah have mercy on him) said: We seek refuge in Allah from being among those who hate Āisha—the beloved of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), the pure and exonerated woman of consummate truthfulness, daughter of the man of consummate truthfulness, and Mother of the Believers. May Allah be pleased with her and with her father, the caliph of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
