1873 — Ibn Makhlad also narrated to us, saying: Saīd ibn Uthmān narrated to us, from Abbās al-Khayyāt, who said: I heard Ibn Buhlūl—meaning Ishāq—say: Ishāq ibn Īsā, a grandson of Dāwūd ibn Abī Hind through his daughter, narrated to us, saying: Uthaym ibn Bistām al-Madīnī narrated to us, saying: “I saw the grave of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when Umar ibn Abd al-Azīz arrived. I saw that the Prophet’s grave (peace and blessings be upon him) was raised approximately four finger-widths and covered with pebbles of a somewhat reddish hue. I saw Abū Bakr’s grave (may Allah be pleased with him) behind the Prophet’s grave (peace and blessings be upon him), and it was lower than his. I also saw Umar’s grave (may Allah be pleased with him) behind ⦗2392⦘ Abū Bakr’s grave (may Allah be pleased with him), and it was lower than his.”
Ibn Makhlad illustrated its arrangement in the report with a diagram, as follows.
Muhammad ibn al-Husayn (may Allah have mercy on him) said: This accords with what Yahyā ibn al-Husayn mentioned in his book. All the reports therefore concur that Abū Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) are buried alongside the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). All praise belongs to Allah, Lord of the worlds. May Allah bless Muhammad the Prophet and his family and grant him peace. What I have mentioned is sufficient, if Allah Most High wills, and in Him is all trust.
