1858 — Abū Saīd Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Ziyād al-Arābī narrated to us. He said: Ishāq ibn Yahyā al-Dihqān narrated to us. He said: Muhammad ibn Ubayd narrated to us. He said: Abd Allah ibn Hakīm ibn Jubayr narrated to us, from his father, who said: I was in a gathering attended by a group of Shiites, and some of them disparaged Abū Bakr and Umar—may Allah be pleased with them both. I asked, “On whose authority does the person who says this—may Allah curse him—rely?” A man among them replied, “We learned it from Abū Jafar.” He said: I then met Abū ⦗2380⦘ Jafar and asked him, “What do you say concerning Abū Bakr and Umar?” He replied, “And what do the people say concerning them?” I said, “They belittle them both.” He replied, “Only renegades speak of them that way. Remain loyal to them both, just as you are loyal to the Commander of the Faithful, Ali ibn Abī Tālib—may Allah be pleased with him.”
