1843 — Abū al-Qāsim ‘Abd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-‘Azīz al-Baghawī narrated to us, saying: Dāwud ibn ‘Amr al-Dabbī narrated to us, saying: ‘Īsā ibn Yūnus narrated to us, from ‘Umar ibn Sa‘īd ibn Abī Husayn, who said: Ibn Abī Mulayka narrated to us that Abū ‘Amr, the freedman of ⦗2363⦘ ‘Ā’isha, informed him that ‘Ā’isha—may Allah be pleased with her—said:

“One of the blessings Allah Most High bestowed upon me was that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was taken in death in my house, passing away as he rested against my chest, and that Allah, the Most Generous, brought my saliva and his together at the time of his death.

“My brother ‘Abd al-Rahmān entered while I was supporting the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, against my chest, and he had a tooth-stick in his hand. The Messenger of Allah began looking at it, and I knew that he liked using the tooth-stick, so I asked, ‘Shall I take it for you?’ He nodded to indicate yes, so I handed it to him. He put it into his mouth, but it was too hard for him. I took it back and asked, ‘Shall I soften it for you?’ He nodded to indicate yes, so I softened it for him, and he passed it over his teeth.

“Before him was a small leather vessel containing water. He began dipping his hand into it, wiping his face with it, and saying, ‘There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah. Death surely has its agonies.’ Then he raised his hand—Ibn Abī Husayn gestured with his finger—and continued saying, ‘The Highest Companion,’ until the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was taken in death and his hand fell.”

Muhammad ibn al-Husayn—may Allah have mercy on him—said: Our purpose in citing this report is the burial of Abū Bakr and ‘Umar—may Allah be pleased with them both—alongside the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, in the house of ‘Ā’isha—may Allah be pleased with her.
