1826 — Abū Jaʿfar Muhammad ibn al-Husayn al-Kūfī al-Ushnānī narrated to us. He said: Ahmad ibn Abd al-Hamīd ibn Khālid narrated to us. He said: Abū Usāma narrated to us, from Misʿar, who said: Abū Awn al-Thaqafī narrated to me, from Muhammad ibn Hātib, who said:
Uthmān was mentioned in the presence of al-Husayn ibn Ali—may Allah be pleased with them—so al-Husayn said, “The Commander of the Faithful, Ali—may Allah be pleased with him—is coming to you now, so ask him about Uthmān.”
When Ali arrived, they asked him about Uthmān—may Allah be pleased with them both. He recited this verse from al-Māʾidah: “There is no blame upon those who believe and do righteous deeds” [al-Māʾidah: 93]. As he came to each phrase of the verse, he said, “Uthmān was among those who believed; Uthmān was among those who feared Allah.” He then continued reciting until the words of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: “And Allah loves those who do good” [Āl Imrān: 134].
