1823 — Abū Hafs Umar ibn Ayyūb al-Saqatī narrated to us. He said: Muhammad ibn Muawiyah ibn Mālij narrated to us. He said: Ali ibn Hāshim narrated to us, from his father, from Abū al-Jahhāf, who said: After allegiance had been pledged to Abū Bakr—may Allah be pleased with him—and Ali—may Allah be pleased with him—⦗2333⦘ and his companions had pledged allegiance to him, Abū Bakr stood on three occasions and said, “O people, I have released you from your pledge of allegiance to me. Is anyone opposed?” He said: Ali—may Allah be pleased with him—would then be among the first to stand and say, “No, by Allah! We will neither release you nor seek release from our pledge to you. The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—put you forward, so who could put you back?”
