Al-Shariah li-al-AjurriAl-Ajurri

1820 — Abū Bakr ibn Abī Dāwūd informed us. He said: My paternal uncle Muhammad ibn al-Ashath narrated to us. He said: Muallā narrated to us. He said: Wuhayb narrated to us, from Jafar ibn Muhammad, from his father, that Umar ibn al-Khattāb—may Allah be pleased with him—asked Ali—may Allah be pleased with him—for the hand of Umm Kulthūm—may Allah be pleased with her—and said, “Give her to me in marriage.” Ali—may Allah honor his countenance—replied, “I am reserving her for the son of my brother Jafar—may Allah be pleased with him.” Umar said, “Give her to me in marriage. By Allah, no one else expects from her father what I expect.” Ali then gave her to him in marriage.

Umar went to the Emigrants and said, “Congratulate me on my marriage.” They asked, “Whom have you married, O Commander of the Faithful?” He replied, “Umm Kulthūm, Ali’s daughter by Fātima—may Allah be pleased with them both. Fātima was the daughter of the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace. I heard the Messenger of Allah say, ‘Every bond of lineage and marriage will be severed on the Day of Resurrection except my bonds of lineage and marriage.’ I therefore wished there to be a bond of kinship between me and the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace.”

Muhammad ibn al-Husayn said, “These are the chosen ones of whom Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: ‘We shall remove from their hearts ⦗2331⦘ all rancor; as brothers, they will sit upon couches facing one another’ [al-Hijr 15:47]. May Allah be pleased with them.”
