1819 — Al-Firyābī narrated to us. He said: Qutayba ibn Saʿīd narrated to us. He said: Al-Layth ibn Saʿd narrated to us, from Hishām ibn Saʿd, from Atā al-Khurāsānī, who said: Umar—may Allah be pleased with him—asked Ali—may Allah honor his countenance—for the hand of his daughter Umm Kulthūm, whose mother was Fātima—may Allah be pleased with her—the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Ali—may Allah be pleased with him—said, “She is young.” Umar replied, “Even if she is young.” Ali said, “I have reserved her for the son of Jaʿfar al-Tayyār—may Allah be pleased with him.” ⦗2330⦘ Umar—may Allah be pleased with him—said, “I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, ‘Every bond of lineage and marriage will be severed on the Day of Resurrection except my bonds of lineage and marriage.’ That is why I wished to marry her.”
Ali—may Allah be pleased with him—said, “I shall send her to you so that you may see how young she is.” He therefore sent her to him. She said, “My father asks you, ‘Are you pleased with the garment?’” He replied, “I am pleased with it.” Ali then gave her to him in marriage—may Allah be pleased with them both—and Umar assigned her a dowry of forty thousand.
