1816 — Abū Bakr ibn Abī Dāwūd narrated to us. He said: Mūsā ibn Abd al-Rahmān al-Qallāʾ narrated to us. He said: Atā ibn Muslim narrated to us, from Sufyān al-Thawrī, from Abū Ishāq, from Abū Maryam, who said:
I saw Ali ibn Abī Tālib—may Allah be pleased with him—wearing an old mantle whose edges had worn away. I said, “O Commander of the Faithful, I have a request to make of you.” He asked, “What is it?” I replied, “That you cast aside this mantle and wear another.” He then sat down, drew the mantle over his face, and began to weep. I said, “O Commander of the Faithful, had I known that my words would affect you so deeply, I would not have said them.” He replied, “This mantle was given to me to wear by my intimate friend.” I asked, “Who is your intimate friend?” He replied, “Umar—may Allah have mercy on him. Indeed, Umar was a servant who was true to Allah—glorious is His majesty—and Allah was true to him.”
