He said: Yahyā ibn Ishāq al-Sālahīnī narrated to us. He said: Salama ibn al-Aswad narrated to us. He said: Abū Abd al-Rahmān informed me. He said: Ali—may Allah be pleased with him—came in to see Umar—may Allah be pleased with him—who had been covered with his garment. He said, “There is no one with whose record of deeds I would rather meet Allah, Mighty and Majestic, than this man lying covered among you.” Then he said, “May Allah have mercy upon you, O son of al-Khattāb! You were indeed deeply versed in Allah’s rulings, and Allah, Mighty and Majestic, truly held a mighty place in your heart. You truly feared Allah, Mighty and Majestic, in your dealings with people, yet did not fear people where Allah, Mighty and Majestic, was concerned. You were unstinting in support of truth and withheld everything from falsehood. You partook little of this world and took your fill of the Hereafter. You were given neither to fault-finding nor to excessive praise.”
