Al-Shariah li-al-AjurriAl-Ajurri

and they held him in great esteem. He was sincere in his love for them and wholehearted in his obedience to them. He fought those whom they fought, loved what they loved, and hated what they hated. They consulted him concerning momentous matters, and he advised them as a sincere, compassionate, and loving counselor. Thus, much of their governance proceeded in accordance with his counsel.

Abū Bakr—may Allah be pleased with him—then passed away, and Alī grieved deeply at his loss. Umar—may Allah be pleased with him—was killed, and Alī wept for him at length. Uthmān—may Allah be pleased with him—was wrongfully killed, but Allah, Mighty and Majestic, absolved Alī of responsibility for his bloodshed; in Alī’s view, his killing was a manifest injustice.

Alī then assumed the caliphate after them. He followed their Sunnah, pursued their course, followed in their footsteps, and trod their path. He narrated reports from the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless and grant him peace—concerning their virtues. On more than one occasion, he addressed the people, spoke of their eminent rank, condemned those who opposed them, disavowed their enemies, and commanded that their Sunnah and conduct be followed. May Allah be pleased with him and with them.

These are the four about whom the Prophet—may Allah bless and grant him peace—said: “Love for these four is found together only in a believer’s heart: Abū Bakr, Umar, Uthmān, and Alī—may Allah be pleased with them.”

Muhammad ibn al-Husayn—may Allah Most High have mercy on him—said: None will love them except a God-fearing believer whom Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has guided to the truth. None will fail to love them—or fail to love even one of them—except a wretched person who has been diverted from the path of truth. Our position concerning them is that, with respect to the caliphate and precedence in merit, we say: Abū Bakr, then Umar, then Uthmān, then Alī—may Allah be pleased with them.

And it is said—may Allah have mercy on you—that love for Abū Bakr, Umar, Uthmān, and Alī is never found together
