Qāsim ibn Zakariyyā al-Mutarriz also narrated to us, saying: Hārūn ibn ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us, saying: Sulaymān ibn ʿAbd al-Rahmān al-Dimashqī narrated to us, saying: Khālid ibn Yazīd ibn Abī Mālik narrated to us, from his father, from ʿAtāʾ ibn Abī Rabāh, from Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAbd al-Rahmān ibn ʿAwf, from his father, from the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—who said:

“O Ibn ʿAwf, you are among the wealthy. Lend to Allah Most High, and He will set your feet free.”

Ibn ʿAwf asked, “What is it that I should lend to Allah, O ⦗2305⦘ Messenger of Allah?”

He replied, “Divest yourself of everything you now possess.”

He asked, “O Messenger of Allah, all my wealth—every last bit of it?”

He replied, “Yes.”

Ibn ʿAwf departed, deeply troubled by this. The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—then sent for him and said:

“Gabriel—peace be upon him—came to me and said, ‘Tell ʿAbd al-Rahmān to honor his guest, give to anyone who asks, and begin with those under his care. If he does so, that will purify the wealth he possesses.’”
