1787 — Abū al-Qāsim ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muhammad ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-Baghawī also narrated to us, saying: Saʿīd ibn ʿAbd al-Rahmān al-Makhzūmī narrated to us, saying: Sufyān narrated to us, from Yahyā ibn Subayh, from Qatāda, from Sālim ibn Abī al-Jaʿd, from Maʿdān ibn Abī Talha, that ʿUmar ⦗2303⦘—may Allah be pleased with him—said from the pulpit: “I have entrusted the matter after me to these six men with whom the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—was pleased when he passed away: ʿUthmān, ʿAlī, ʿAbd al-Rahmān, Talha, al-Zubayr, and Saʿd. Whomever they appoint from among themselves shall be the caliph.”
