1783 — Abū Bakr Qāsim ibn Zakariyyā al-Mutarriz also narrated to us, saying: Abū Bakr ⦗2299⦘ ibn Zanjawayh narrated to us, saying: Abū Sālih—that is, ʿAbd Allah ibn Sālih, al-Layth’s scribe—narrated to us. Al-Mutarriz said: Ahmad ibn Sufyān narrated to us, saying: Ibn Bukayr narrated to us, saying: Al-Layth ibn Saʿd narrated to us, saying: Yazīd ibn ʿAbd Allah narrated to me, from Abū Bakr ibn Muhammad ibn ʿAmr ibn Hazm, who said:
Arwā bint Aws came to my father, Muhammad ibn ʿAmr, and said, “Abū ʿAbd al-Malik, Saʿīd ibn Zayd ibn ʿAmr ibn Nufayl has built an embankment”—Ibn Sufyān’s version reads, “an embankment on my land”—“so go to him and speak to him, and let him remove it from my land. By Allah, if he does not, I shall denounce him publicly in the Mosque of the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace.”
He replied, “Do not cause offense to a Companion of the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace. He would never wrong you or take any right of yours.”
She left and went to ʿUmāra ibn ʿAmr and ʿAbd Allah ibn Maslama. She said to them, “Go to Saʿīd ibn Zayd. He has wronged me and built an embankment on my land. By Allah, if he does not remove it, I shall denounce him publicly in the Mosque of the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace.”
They set out and came to him on his land in al-ʿAqīq. He asked them, “What brings you here?”
They replied, “Arwā bint Aws came to us and claimed that you had built an embankment on her land. She swore by Allah that if you did not remove it, she would denounce you publicly in the Mosque of the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace.” Ibn Bukayr added: “We therefore thought it best to come and inform you and mention the matter to you.”
He said, “I heard the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—say: ‘Whoever wrongfully takes a handspan of land will be made by Allah, Glorified and Exalted, to wear it as a collar from seven earths on the Day of Resurrection.’ Let her come and take whatever rightfully belongs to her. O Allah, if she has lied about me, do not cause her to die before You take away her sight, and make that land the place of her death.”
They returned and informed her of this. She came and demolished the embankment, then erected a structure. Only a short time passed before she became blind. She used to rise during the night, accompanied by a slave girl who guided her, in order to awaken the workers. One night she arose but left the slave girl behind without waking her. She went out walking until she fell into the well, ⦗2300⦘ and by morning she was dead.
