1741 – Abū Muhammad Abd Allāh ibn Sālih al-Bukhārī informed us: Abū Hammām al-Walīd ibn Shujā narrated to us: Abd al-Rahīm ibn Sulaymān narrated to us: Isrā’īl ibn Yūnus narrated to us, from Abd al-Alā al-Tha‘labī, from Sa‘īd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn Abbās ⦗2260⦘: A man reviled one of al-Abbās’s forefathers who had lived during the pre-Islamic period, so al-Abbās slapped him. The man’s people then came and said, “By Allah, we shall slap him just as he slapped our kinsman!” They went so far as to put on their weapons. When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, learned of this, he ascended the pulpit and said, “O people, whom among all people do you know to be most honored by Allah, Mighty and Majestic?” They replied, “You.” He said, “Indeed, al-Abbās is of me, and I am of him. Do not revile our dead and thereby hurt our living.” The people then came and said, “O Messenger of Allah, we seek refuge in Allah from your anger. Ask forgiveness for us.”
