1740 – Abū Bakr ibn Abī Dāwūd narrated to us: Yūsuf ibn Mūsā al-Qattān narrated to us: Ubayd Allāh ibn Mūsā narrated to us: Isrā’īl narrated to us, from Abd al-A‘lā, who heard Sa‘īd ibn Jubayr say: Ibn Abbās, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated to me that a man reviled another man who had lived during the pre-Islamic period, so al-Abbās, may Allah be pleased with him, slapped him. The man who had been reviled was a relative of al-Abbās. The offender’s people then came and said, “By Allah, we shall slap him just as he slapped our kinsman!” They went so far as to put on their weapons. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, then ascended the pulpit and said, “O people, whom among the inhabitants of the earth do you know to be most honored by Allah, Mighty and Majestic?” They replied, “You.” He said, “Indeed, al-Abbās is of me, and I am of him. Do not revile our dead and thereby hurt our living.” The people then came and said, “O Messenger of Allah, we seek refuge in Allah from your anger. Ask forgiveness for us.”
