1724 — Abū Saʿīd al-Mufaddal ibn Muhammad al-Jandī informed us: Ali ibn Ziyād al-Lahjī narrated to us: Abū Qurra Mūsā ibn Tāriq narrated to us: Ismāʿīl ibn Abd Allah narrated to us, from Ibrāhīm ibn Muhammad al-Fazārī, who said: Al-Hasan ibn Umāra narrated to us, from al-Hakam ibn Utayba, from Mujāhid, from Ibn Abbās, who said:
When the polytheists withdrew from the Battle of Uhud, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, looked over the slain and saw a sight that distressed him. He saw that Hamza, may Allah be pleased with him, had had his abdomen slit open, his nose cut off, and his ears severed. He said, “Were it not that ⦗2242⦘ the women would grieve and that this would become a practice after me, I would leave him until Allah, Mighty and Majestic, resurrected him from the bellies of wild beasts and birds, and I would mutilate thirty of them in retaliation for him.”
He then called for a mantle and covered Hamza’s face with it, but his feet remained exposed. When he covered his feet with it, his face remained exposed. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, therefore covered his face and placed fragrant idhkhir grass over his feet. He then brought him forward and pronounced the takbīr over him ten times. Thereafter, a man would be brought and placed beside him, and he would offer the funeral prayer over him. The man would then be removed and another brought and placed there, while Hamza remained in his place, until he had offered seventy funeral prayers over him. The slain that day numbered seventy.
After he had buried them and finished attending to them, this verse was revealed:
“Call to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good counsel.” [al-Nahl: 125]
—up to the words of Allah, Mighty and Majestic:
“If you retaliate, then retaliate only to the extent of the harm done to you. But if you are patient, that is surely better for those who are patient. ⦗2243⦘ Be patient, for your patience comes only through Allah.” [al-Nahl: 127]
He said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was patient; he neither retaliated nor killed anyone.
