Chapter: The Virtue of Hamza ibn Abd al-Muttalib—may Allah be pleased with him. Muhammad ibn al-Husayn—may Allah have mercy on him—said:

1722 — He said: Abū Bakr ibn Abī Dāwūd informed us in Kitāb al-Masābīh (“The Book of Lamps”): Hamza ibn Abd al-Muttalib was said to be known as Abū Umāra, and also as Abū Yaʿlā. He was the Lion of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and the lion of His Messenger. He was present at Badr, prayed facing both qiblas, and undertook the emigration when the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—did. He was killed on the day of Uhud. The Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—offered the funeral prayer over him and pronounced seventy takbīrs over him. His sons, Yaʿlā and Umāra, were born to Khawla bint Qays al-Ansārī, but he left no surviving male descendants. Hamza also had a daughter, whom he gave in marriage to Shaddād ibn al-Hād al-Laythī; her son was the hadith scholar Abd Allah ibn Shaddād.
