1713 — Abū Bakr ibn Abī Dāwūd informed us; he said: My paternal uncle narrated to us; he said: Muallā narrated to us; he said: Wuhayb narrated to us, from Ja'far ibn Muhammad, from his father: Umar ibn al-Khattāb asked Alī—may Allah be pleased with them both—for Umm Kulthūm’s hand. Umar said, “Give her to me in marriage.” Alī replied, “I am reserving her for my brother Ja'far’s son—may Allah be pleased with him.” Umar said, “Give her to me in marriage, for by Allah, no one else hopes to gain through her father what I hope to gain.” Alī therefore gave her to him in marriage.
Umar then went to the Emigrants and said, “Congratulate me.” They asked, “On marrying whom, O Commander of the Faithful?” He replied, “Umm Kulthūm, the daughter of Alī by Fātima, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him. I heard the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—say: ‘Every tie of kinship by marriage and every line of descent will be severed on the Day of Resurrection except my lineage and my ties of kinship by marriage.’ I therefore wished for there to be a bond of kinship between the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—and me.”
