1712 — Al-Firyābī informed us; he said: Qutaybah ibn Saʿīd narrated to us; he said: al-Layth ibn Saʿd narrated to us, from Hishām ibn Saʿd, from Atā al-Khurasānī, who said: Umar ibn al-Khattāb—may Allah be pleased with him—asked Alī—may Allah be pleased with him—for the hand of his daughter Umm Kulthūm, whose mother was Fātima, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him. Alī said, “She is young.” Umar replied, “Even if she is young.” Alī—may Allah be pleased with him—then said, “I have reserved her for my brother Jaʿfar’s son.” Umar said, “I heard the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—say: ‘Every line of descent and every tie of kinship by marriage will be severed on the Day of Resurrection except my lineage and my ties of kinship by marriage.’ That is why I seek her hand.” Alī said to him, “I shall send her to you. Will you see for yourself how young she is?” He sent her to him, and when she came, she said, “My father asks you: ‘Are you pleased with the garment?’” Umar replied, “I am pleased with it.” Alī—may Allah be pleased with both men—then gave her to him in marriage, and Umar assigned her a dowry of forty thousand.
