1704 — Abū Bakr ibn Abī Dāwūd also narrated to us, saying: Abd Allah ibn Shabīb al-Raba‘ī narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Yahyā Abū Ghassān narrated to us, saying: My father narrated to me, from Muhammad ibn Ishāq, from al-Zuhrī, from Ikrima, from Ibn Abbās, who reported that the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—addressed the people during the Farewell Pilgrimage and said:

“To proceed: O people, listen to these words of mine, for I do not know; perhaps I shall not meet you again after this year.”

The Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—then asked, “What day is this?” ⦗2219⦘ The people replied, “This is the day of the Greater Pilgrimage—the Day of Sacrifice.” He then asked, “What month is this?” The people replied, “This is a sacred month.” He then asked, “What land is this?” They replied, “This is a sacred land.” He said:

“Your blood and your wealth are inviolable among you until the Day of Resurrection, when you meet your Lord, just as this day of yours is sacred in this month of yours, in this land of yours. You shall indeed meet your Lord, Mighty and Majestic, and He will question you about your deeds. I have delivered the message.”

Muhammad ibn al-Husayn—may Allah have mercy on him—said: He then related the sermon in full, and at its conclusion he said:

“Take heed! I have left among you that to which, if you hold fast, you will never go astray thereafter: the Book of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and the sunnah of His Prophet.”

The Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—then asked, “Take heed! Have I conveyed the message?” The people replied, “O Allah, yes.” He then said, “O Allah, bear witness.”
