1690 — Abū Bakr ibn Abī Dāwūd al-Sijistānī narrated to us, saying: Yahyā ibn Hātim al-Askarī narrated to us, saying: Bishr ibn Mihrān narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Dīnār narrated to us, from Dāwūd ibn Abī Hind, from al-Shabī, from Jābir ibn Abd Allāh, who said:
The delegation from Najrān—al-Āqib and al-Tayyib—came to the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace. He invited them to Islam, but they said, “Muhammad, we embraced Islam ⦗2202⦘ before you did.” He replied, “You are lying. If you wish, I shall tell you what prevents you from embracing Islam.” They said, “Go ahead and tell us.” He said, “Love of the cross, drinking wine, and eating pork—so there is neither wealth nor life.”
He then challenged them to invoke Allah’s curse upon whichever side was lying. They agreed to meet him early the following morning. The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—went out the next morning, taking Alī, Fātima, al-Hasan, and al-Husayn—may Allah be pleased with them—by the hand. He then sent for the two men, but they refused to come and agreed to pay him tribute. The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said, “By Him Who sent me with the truth, had they done so, the valley would have rained fire upon them.”
Jābir said: This verse was revealed concerning them: “Then say, ‘Come, let us call our sons and your sons, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves’” [Āl Imrān: 61].
Al-Shabī said: “Our sons and your sons” refers to al-Hasan and al-Husayn; “our women and your women” refers to Fātima; and “ourselves and yourselves” refers to Alī ibn Abī Tālib—may Allah be pleased with them.
