174 — Ibn Makhlad informed us, saying: Abū Dāwūd narrated to us, saying: I heard Ahmad ibn Hanbal when a man mentioned to him that someone had said, “The names of Allah are created, and the Quran is created.” Ahmad replied, “This is manifest unbelief.” I asked Ahmad, “Is whoever says that the Quran is created an unbeliever?” He replied, “I say that he is an unbeliever.”
