1680 — Abū Bakr ibn Abī Dāwūd narrated to us, saying: Yaqūb ibn Sufyān narrated to us, saying: Hajjāj ibn Abī Manī narrated to us, from his grandfather, from al-Zuhrī, who said:
“The first woman whom the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—married was Khadīja bint Khuwaylid ibn Asad ibn Abd al-Uzzā ibn Qusayy. He married her during the pre-Islamic period, and her father gave her to him in marriage. She bore the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—al-Qāsim, after whom he took his kunyah; al-Tāhir; Zaynab; Ruqayya; Umm Kulthūm; and Fātima.
“As for Zaynab, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—he gave her in marriage during the pre-Islamic period to Abū al-Ās ibn al-Rabī ibn Abd al-Uzzā ibn Abd Shams ibn Abd Manāf. She bore Abū al-Ās a daughter named Umāma. Ali ibn Abī Tālib—may Allah be pleased with him—married her after the death of Fātima—may Allah be pleased with her. Ali—may Allah be pleased with him—was killed while Umāma was still married to him. Following Ali, al-Mughīra ibn Nawfal ibn al-Hārith ibn Abd al-Muttalib married Umāma, and she died while married to him—may Allah be pleased with her.
“As for Ruqayya, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—Uthmān ibn Affān—may Allah be pleased with him—married her. She bore him Abd Allah ibn Uthmān, after whom Uthmān—may Allah be pleased with him—was initially given his kunyah, until ⦗2192⦘ he was later given a kunyah after another son of his, Amr. Indeed, he was known by a kunyah derived from each of them. Ruqayya—may Allah be pleased with her—then died around the time of Badr, and Uthmān remained behind for her burial. That was what prevented him from attending Badr. Uthmān had previously emigrated to Abyssinia, taking Ruqayya with him.
“As for Umm Kulthūm, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—Uthmān—may Allah be pleased with him—also married her after her sister Ruqayya. She later died—may Allah be pleased with her—without bearing any children.
“As for Fātima—may Allah be pleased with her—Ali—may Allah be pleased with him—married her. She bore him al-Hasan ibn Ali, the elder, and al-Husayn ibn Ali—may Allah be pleased with them both—as well as Zaynab and Umm Kulthūm—may Allah be pleased with them both. These were Fātima’s children by Ali—may Allah be pleased with them all.
“As for Zaynab, the daughter of Fātima, Abd Allah ibn Jafar married her—may Allah be pleased with them all—and she died while married to him. She bore him Ali ibn Abd Allah ibn Jafar and his brother, who was called Awn.
“As for Umm Kulthūm—may Allah be pleased with her—Umar ibn al-Khattāb—may Allah be pleased with him—married her, and she bore him Zayd ibn Umar. Allah alone grants success.”
