173 — Abū Bakr Muhammad ibn Hārūn al-ʿAskarī, the jurist, narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Yūsuf ibn al-Tabbāʿ narrated to us, saying: I heard a man ask Ahmad ibn Hanbal, “Abū ʿAbd Allāh, may I pray behind someone who drinks intoxicants?” He replied, “No.” The man asked, “Then may I pray behind someone who says that the Quran is created?” He replied, “Glory be to Allah! I forbid you to pray behind a Muslim, yet you ask me about an unbeliever?”
