1679—Abū ʿAlī al-Husayn ibn Zakariyyā al-Sukkarī narrated to us, saying: Ahmad ibn ʿAbd al-Jabbār al-ʿUtāridī narrated to us, saying: Yūnus ibn Bukayr narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishāq, who said: Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Hakīm, the client of al-Zubayr, narrated to us, reporting from Khadīja bint Khuwaylid—may Allah be pleased with her—that, as she sought to reassure Allah’s Messenger—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—concerning the prophethood with which Allah, Glorious and Majestic, had honored him, she said: “My cousin, can you tell me when this companion of yours who comes to you next appears?” He replied, “Yes.” She said, “Then tell me when he comes.”

One day, while Allah’s Messenger—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—was with her, Gabriel—peace be upon him—came to him, and Allah’s Messenger—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—saw him. He said, “Khadīja, Gabriel—peace be upon him—has come to me.”

She asked, “Do you see him now?”

He replied, “Yes.”

She said, “Then sit beside me on my left.” He did so, and she asked, “Do you see him now?”

He replied, “Yes.”

She said, “Then move and sit beside me on my right.” He moved and sat there, and she asked, “Do you see him now?”

He replied, “Yes.”

She said, “Then move and sit in my lap.” Allah’s Messenger—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—moved and sat there. She asked, “Do you see him now?”

He replied, “Yes.”

She then uncovered herself and cast off her head covering. She asked, “Do you see him now?”

He replied, “No.”

She said, “This is no devil. He is indeed an angel, my cousin. Stand firm and rejoice.” She then believed in him, ⦗2190⦘ and testified that what he had brought was the truth.

Muhammad ibn al-Husayn—may Allah have mercy on him—said: “This was the conduct of a divinely guided, noble, chosen woman. Allah Most High—Glorious and Majestic—honored her and reserved her for His Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—as the first of his wives among the Mothers of the Believers. Allah honored her with children by him and caused the pure, blessed progeny to descend from her. May Allah be pleased with her.”
