Al-Shariah li-al-AjurriAl-Ajurri

1661 — Abū Muhammad ‘Abd al-Rahmān ibn Asad al-Fārisī narrated to us, saying: Ishāq ibn Ibrāhīm al-Dabarī informed us ⦗2170⦘, saying: ‘Abd al-Razzāq informed us, saying: Ma‘mar informed us, from Ayyūb, from Ibn Sīrīn, that al-Hasan ibn ‘Alī—may Allah be pleased with them both—said:

“If you were to survey all that lies between Jābirs and Jābalq, you would find no man other than my brother and me whose grandfather was a prophet. I believe that you should unite behind Mu‘āwiyah. Yet I do not know; perhaps he may be a trial for you and an enjoyment for a time.”

Ma‘mar said, “Jābirs and Jābalq mean the East and the West.”

Muhammad ibn al-Husayn—may Allah have mercy on him—said: Consider—may Allah have mercy on you—and take careful note of what al-Hasan did: the noble son of a noble father, the brother of a noble man, and the son of Fātimah al-Zahrā’, the very heart of the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—who embodied every form of nobility. When he saw that no worldly rule could be established without the loss of lives, the loss of religion, successive tribulations, ⦗2171⦘ and other matters whose consequences for the Muslims were feared, he safeguarded his religion and his honor, and he safeguarded the community of Muhammad—peace and blessings be upon him. He did not seek to attain that worldly station to which he had a rightful claim, though he was fully worthy of it. He relinquished it despite having the power to attain it, thereby preserving the purity of his religion, seeking the welfare of the community of Muhammad—peace and blessings be upon him—and acting in keeping with his own nobility.

How could it have been otherwise, when the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—said, “This son of mine is a leader, and through him Allah—Glorified and Exalted—will reconcile two great groups of Muslims”?

It came to pass just as the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—had said. May Allah be pleased with al-Hasan and al-Husayn, with their father and their mother, and may He benefit us through our love for them.
