1640 — Abū al-Qāsim Abd Allah ibn Muhammad al-Baghawī narrated to us: ⦗2153⦘ Muhammad ibn Abbād al-Makkī narrated to us: Hātim ibn Ismāīl narrated to us, from Sad ibn Ishāq ibn Kab ibn Ujra, from Ishāq ibn Abī Habība, the client of Rabāh, the client of the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—from Abū Hurayra. This is how Ibn Abbād related this hadith:

Mārwān came to Abū Hurayra during the illness from which he died and said to him, “Since we became companions, I have found no fault with you in anything except your love for Hasan and Husayn.” Abū Hurayra roused himself and sat up, then said, “I bear witness that we set out to perform umra with the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him. While we were on the road, the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—heard Hasan and Husayn—may Allah be pleased with them both—crying while they were with their mother. He quickened his pace until he reached them, and I heard him ask her, ‘What is wrong with my two sons?’ She replied, ‘They are thirsty.’

“He reached behind him for his waterskin but found no water in it. He called out, ‘Does anyone among you have any water?’ Every one of us reached back toward his saddle hook, seeking water in his waterskin, but not one of us found so much as a drop. He was told, ‘O Messenger of Allah, not one of us has a single drop.’ The Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—said, ‘Hand me one of them.’ She handed the child to him from within the curtained litter. He took him and drew him to his chest while the child cried and would ⦗2154⦘ not stop. He put out his tongue for him, and the child began sucking it until he calmed down and fell silent; no further crying was heard from him.

“The other child continued crying as before and did not stop. He handed the first back to her and said, ‘Hand me the other one.’ She handed him over, and he did the same with him. Both children fell silent, and not a sound was heard from either of them. He then said, ‘Move on.’ We dispersed to the right and left, away from the women’s litters, until we met him on the road.”

Abū Hurayra said, “How, then, could I not love these two when I witnessed this from the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him?”
