1615 — Abū Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Makhlad al-Attār narrated to us: Abū al-Hasan Muhammad ibn Nahār ibn Ammār ibn Yahyā narrated to us, from Yalā al-Taymī, who said: Abd al-Malik ibn Khiyār, the cousin of Yahyā ibn Maīn, narrated to us: Muhammad ibn Dīnār al-Gharqī narrated to us on the coast of Damascus: Hushaym narrated to us, from Yūnus, from al-Hasan, from Anas, who said:

While I was sitting with the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—revelation came over him. When it lifted from him, he said to me, “Anas, do you know what Gabriel—peace be upon him—has brought me from the Lord of the Throne—glorified and exalted is He?”

I said, “May my father and mother be sacrificed for you! What has Gabriel—peace be upon him—brought you from the Lord of the Throne—glorified and exalted is He?”

He said, “Allah—glorified and exalted is He—has commanded me to marry Fātima to Alī. Go and summon Abū Bakr, Umar, Uthmān, Alī, Talha, al-Zubayr, and an equal number of the Helpers.”

Anas said: I summoned them, and when they had taken their seats, the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said:

“Praise belongs to Allah, Who is praised for His blessings, worshiped for His power, obeyed by His sovereign authority, sought for what is with Him, and feared on account of His punishment; His command prevails throughout His earth and heaven. He created all creation through His power, distinguished them by His ordinances, gave them honor through His religion, and ennobled them through His Prophet Muhammad—may Allah bless him and grant him peace. ⦗2130⦘

“Allah—glorified and exalted is He—then made affinity through marriage an added bond of kinship and a prescribed obligation. Through it He knit together family ties and enjoined its observance upon humankind. He—blessed is His name and exalted is His remembrance—said: ‘And He is the One Who created a human being from water, then established for him bonds of lineage and marriage.’ [al-Furqān: 54]

“Allah’s command proceeds to His decree, and His decree proceeds to His predestination. Every predestined matter has an appointed term, and every term has a Book. Allah erases what He wills and confirms, and with Him is the Mother of the Book.

“Allah—glorified and exalted is He—has commanded me to marry Fātima to Alī. I call you to witness that I have married her to him for four hundred mithqāls of silver, provided Alī consents to it.”

Alī—may Allah be pleased with him—was absent, for the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—had sent him on an errand. The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—then ordered that a platter of unripe dates be brought and placed before us. He said, “Help yourselves!”

While we were helping ourselves, Alī—may Allah be pleased with him—arrived. The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—smiled at him and then said, “Alī, Allah—glorified and exalted is He—has commanded me to marry you to Fātima. I have married her to you for four hundred mithqāls of silver, if you consent.”

Alī replied, “I consent, O Messenger of Allah.”

Alī then bent forward and fell prostrate in gratitude to Allah—glorified and exalted is He—for having endeared him to the best of creation, Muhammad—may Allah bless him and grant him peace.

The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said, “May Allah bestow blessings upon you both, fill you both with blessing, grant you good fortune, and bring forth from you abundant and virtuous offspring.”

Anas said: By Allah, He indeed brought forth from them abundant and virtuous offspring.
