1613 – Ibn Abd al-Hamīd also narrated to us: Muhammad ibn Rizq Allah narrated to us: Al-Hakam ibn Nāfi, Abū al-Yamān al-Himsī, narrated to us: Shuayb ibn Abī Hamza narrated to us: Al-Zuhrī narrated to me: Alī ibn al-Husayn—may Allah be pleased with them both—informed me that al-Miswar ibn Makhrama informed him that Alī ibn Abī Tālib—may Allah be pleased with him—sought the hand of Abū Jahl’s daughter while he was married to Fātima, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him. When Fātima—may Allah be pleased with her—heard of this, she went to the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him. He asked her, “What is the matter, Fātima?” She replied, “Your people are saying that you do not become angry on behalf of your daughters, yet here is Alī ibn Abī Tālib intending to marry the daughter of Abū Jahl.”

Al-Miswar ibn Makhrama said: The Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—stood up, and I heard him recite the testimony of faith and then say ⦗2124⦘: “To proceed: Fātima, daughter of Muhammad, is but a part of me. By Allah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—and the daughter of Allah’s enemy shall never be brought together.”

He said: When this reached Alī—may Allah be pleased with him—he abandoned the marriage proposal.
