1601 — Abū Bakr ibn Abī Dāwūd narrated to us, saying: Nasr ibn ʿAlī al-Jahdamī narrated to us, saying: al-ʿAbbās ibn Jaʿfar informed us, from his father, from his grandfather, from ʿAlī ibn Abī Tālib—may Allah be pleased with him:
When the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—gave Fātima—may Allah be pleased with her—to him in marriage, he called for some water and spat it from his mouth. He then sprinkled it into the opening of ʿAlī’s garment and between his shoulder blades. Next, he called Fātima and did the same to her. He then invoked Allah’s protection over him by reciting “Say: He is Allah, the One” and the two surahs seeking refuge.
Then he said, “Fātima!” She came walking modestly, and he did to her as he had done to him. He then said, “I have spared no effort in marrying you to the best of my household.”
