1568 — Al-Firyābī narrated to us. He said: Safwān ibn Sālih narrated to us. He said: Al-Walīd ibn Muslim narrated to us. He said: Ibn Lahīa narrated to us. He said: Bukayr ibn Abd Allah ibn ⦗2082⦘ al-Ashajj narrated to us, from Ibn Saīd, from Ubayd Allah ibn Abī Rāfi, a client of Umm Salama, who reported that when the Harurites broke away while they were with Ali ibn Abī Tālib—may Allah be pleased with him—they said, “Judgment belongs to Allah alone.”
Ali—may Allah be pleased with him—said, “Indeed. It is a true statement intended to serve falsehood. The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—described certain people, and I certainly recognize their description. They utter the truth, but it goes no farther than here”—and he pointed to his throat. “Of all Allah’s creation, they are the most detested by Allah Almighty. Among them is a black man, one of whose hands resembles a sheep’s teat or the nipple of a breast.”
After Ali—may Allah be pleased with him—had fought them, he said, “Look for him.” They searched but found nothing. He said, “Go back and search again. By Allah, I have neither lied nor been lied to!” He repeated this two or three times. They then found the man in a ruined place, brought him to Ali, and laid him before him.
Ubayd Allah ibn Abī Rāfi said, “I was present when this occurred among them.”
1569 — Abu Bakr ibn Abī Dāwūd also narrated to us. He said: Ahmad ibn Sālih narrated to us. He said: Abd Allah ibn Wahb narrated to us. He said: Amr ibn al-Hārith informed me, from Bukayr ibn al-Ashajj, from Busr ibn Saīd, from Ubayd Allah ibn Abī Rāfi, a client of the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—who reported that when the Harurites broke away while they were with Ali ibn Abī Tālib—may Allah be pleased with him—and he related exactly the same hadith.
