1552 — Sahl ibn Abī Sahl al-Wāsitī related to us, saying: Al-Qāsim ibn Īsā ibn Ibrāhīm al-Tā’ī also related to us, saying: Mu’ammal related to us, from Sufyān, from Ali ibn al-Aqmar, from Abū Juhayfa, from Ali ibn Abī Tālib—may Allah honor his countenance—who said: When the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—sent me to the people of Yemen, he said: I said, “O Messenger of Allah, you are sending me to a people who will bring their questions to me, though I have no knowledge.” He placed his hand upon my chest and then said, “Indeed, Allah, Mighty ⦗2071⦘ and Majestic, will guide your heart and make your tongue firm. When two litigants sit before you, do not pass judgment until you have heard from the second just as you heard from the first, for that is more likely to make the proper judgment clear to you.” Ali—may Allah be pleased with him—said: “I have continued to serve as a judge ever since—or, I have never again doubted a judgment.”
