1546 — Abū Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Makhlad al-Attār narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Khalaf narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Kathīr narrated to us, saying: al-Hārith ibn Hasīra narrated to us, from Abū Dāwūd, from Imrān ibn Husayn, who said:

I was sitting with the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—with Ali—may Allah be pleased with him—beside him, when the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—recited this verse: “Or who answers the distressed when he calls upon Him, removes evil, and makes you successors upon the earth?” [al-Naml: 62]

Ali—may Allah be pleased with him—began to tremble, so the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—held him and asked, “What is the matter with you, O Ali?”

He replied, “O Messenger of Allah, you recited this verse, and I feared that I might be tried by it. I could not control myself, and what you saw came over me.”

The Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—then said, “By Him in whose hand is my soul, none but a believer loves you, and none but a hypocrite hates you.” ⦗2066⦘

Ibn Makhlad said: Abū Bakr—that is, Muhammad ibn Khalaf—told us that Jafar al-Tayālisī came to him to ask about this hadith.

Muhammad ibn al-Husayn—may Allah have mercy on him—said: That is, among the qualities of discerning believers for whom good is intended is genuine affection for Ali ibn Abī Tālib—may Allah be pleased with him—and for the household of the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him. The Quran and the sunnah attest to this.
