When we reached Ghadīr Khumm, the call was made among us: “Gather for prayer!” The ground beneath a tree was swept clean for the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace. He then took Ali—may Allah be pleased with him—by the hand and said, “Do I not have a greater claim over the believers than they have over themselves?” They replied, “Indeed.” He said, “Do I not have a greater claim over every believer than he has over himself?” They replied, “Indeed.” He said, “Then this man is the ally of whoever has me as his ally. O Allah, befriend whoever befriends him, and oppose whoever opposes him.” Umar ibn al-Khattāb—may Allah be pleased with him—subsequently met him and said, “Congratulations, son of Abū Tālib! Morning and evening, you have become the ally of every believer.”
