1523 — Abū Bakr ibn Abī Dāwūd narrated to us: al-Hasan ibn Mudrik ⦗2050⦘ al-Shaybānī and Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn al-Muallā al-Adamī narrated to us, saying: Yahyā ibn Hammād narrated to us: Abū Awāna narrated to us, from al-Amash, from Habīb ibn Abī Thābit, from Āmir ibn Wāthila, Abū al-Tufayl, from Zayd ibn Arqam, who said: When the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—returned from the Farewell Pilgrimage, he stopped at Ghadīr Khumm. He ordered that the ground beneath some large trees be swept clean, and then said: “It is as though I have been summoned and have answered the call.” He then took Ali ibn Abī Tālib—may Allah be pleased with him—by the hand and said: “Allah is my ally, and I am the ally of every believer. Whoever has me as his ally has Ali as his ally. O Allah, befriend whoever befriends him, and oppose whoever opposes him.”
Zayd was asked, “Did you hear this from the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace?” He replied, “My own ears heard it and my own eyes saw it. There was not a single man among those trees who had not heard it with his own ears and seen it with his own eyes.”
